Party-drone might sound like a contradiction but the latest EP by Irish band The Disco Participation Matrix is exactly that! A labour of love for over two years, the two-piece finally got around to releasing the Rave Gravely EP and it bangs.
Combining elements of post-punk, prog, noise and looping electronics, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what keeps it interesting as there’s just so much going on. Packed with wicked riffs, euphoric breakdowns, catchy synth lines and lyrics that have genuinely made me chuckle out loud, every track takes you in a different direction.
It feels like listening to a live jam in the early hours after the night before, when you’re not too sure if what you’re hearing is really happening, or if you’ve just been up too long. The contrast between the gravelly bass and melodic synth lines contributes to this majorly.
Rave Gravely is now available for free download through their Bandcamp below or Spotify. They have also released the project files for the Elektron Analog Four/Keys which was used for making the EP, for anyone who might own one and is keen to fight boredom during the Coronavirus lockdown.
