Having already put out releases on Tigerbeat and King Deluxe as Vaethx – Rob Clouth is back and releasing under his official title (to the taxman anyway). Having interviewed Rob as Vaethx back in 2011, we always knew he was destined for great things, especially when we brought him to Cork for his one and only Irish show the same year (which he absolutely killed by the way).
His latest E.P. Clockwork Atom is out on the 28 April on Berlin based record label, Berghain residency, and nomadic party-starters Leisure System and sees him up the level of glitch once again turn your brain inside out.
It’s too easy to talk about how good the production is on this – it’s his grasp of melody that is the most understated. Title track ”Clockwork Atom” has a seriously delicate tones that wouldn’t sound out of place at a Jon Hopkins show, or at any of his contemporaries shows for that matter. It’s an astonishing piece of work to be honest and I dare you not to pull a gurn face at the 5 minute mark when that beat comes in out of nowhere.
”Islands of Glass” perfectly follows suit with rich harmonic textures again intertwining with some ferocious drum sampling.
Closer ”The Descent” is the slowest of the tracks but is perfectly formed and again builds to a chaotic swirling of beats and synthesis. As the press release perfectly describes ”it’s like a clone coming off an assembly line and being blinded by the sun for the first time”. Couldn’t have described it better myself.
My one gripe with the E.P. is that it’s only three tracks. Mind blown!
Clockwork Atom is out on the 28 April on Vinyl and Digital.
For those of you in London on April 28, Rob plays a gig with Tim Exile in Hackney. More information can be found by clicking the poster below.
